Dr. Bethany Chan 陳敏兒博士

Chief Operating Officer, DeepTranslate Limited

Dr. Bethany M.Y. Chan received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Hong Kong and her M.S. and B.A. in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego. She lectured at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1981 and the University of Hong Kong from 1982 to 1987 and was an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas from 1987 to 1990.

When she returned to Hong Kong in 1990, she joined the finance industry, became CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), and worked as an investment analyst until 2000, lastly with UBS. Then, she studied law (receiving the LL.B. and PCLL in 2003 and 2004) and was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 2007. She practiced as a barrister for 5 years before rejoining the University of Hong Kong as Assistant Registrar in the Registry handling complaints. She now acts as a co-founder and Chief Value Officer of DeepTranslate Limited, a technology startup at HK Science and Technology Park. Currently, she is also an Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and teaches a Master's course on Deep Learning.
 

Prof. Francis Chin 錢玉麟教授

Professor Chin received his B.A.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto, and his M.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University, Fellow of IEEE, HKIE and HKACE. Prior to joining The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 1985, he had taught at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; the University of California, San Diego; the University of Alberta and the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1989-90. At HKU, he was the Chair, Taikoo Professor and the founding Head of the Department. He was an Associate Dean of the Graduate School and the Faculty of Engineering. He retired in 2015 and is now the Emeritus Professor of the University of Hong Kong and Founder of an AI startup, DeepTranslate, in HK SciencePark.

Professor Chin has served as conference chairman and a member of the program committee of numerous international workshops and conferences. He has served as Managing Editor of the International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science and on the editorial boards of journals. Professor Chin received HKU teaching Best Teaching, Teaching Excellence Award and Outstanding Research Award in 1991, 2000 and 2010 respectively. He was also awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 1987. He is in the list of the World's Top 2% Scientists published by Stanford University in October 2022.
